In class yesterday, our professor continued talking about the top five secrets to success. He asked the question, "What do employees want?" If you think about it what is it that really motivates employees to stay at a job? Employees want to know what is in it for them. They need to know how the job is going to benefit their personal lives. In ranking the qualities for what employees want in a career, I was very different from the way supervisors ranked the qualities. Supervisors ranked full appreciation of work done as number one, wheras I ranked work that keeps you interested as number one. I personally feel that a job needs to be fun and interesting or else I have a hard time staying at that job. As you can see, employees and supervisors have a different way of ranking the qualities that are most important to them. If the employee and the supervisor were on the same page, they would have a better relationship and know what to expect. I don't know how many people are on the same page, because I was way off! Satisfied employees lead to satisfied customers. If the employee is having fun and happy about their job, the results will rub off on the customers. I once had a customer come into my store and tell me that all the cashiers always have a smile on their face. He said that we must have a great manager, since everyone is always happy and smiling. I had never seen this customer before, but I know that he had been there before. It makes you stop and look at how your attitude as an employee really does affect the customers in many ways! We watched a clip from Oprah's favorite things in class. She invited teachers from all over the United States to be a part of her recognizing what a great job teachers do. People really want to feel appriciated for all the hard work that they do. Just watching this show makes you feel good about yourself because everyone was happy and extactic. If you surround yourself around positive things, you will be in a better mood. I try to always be in a good mood, even if something is bothering me. I don't think that you need to take your anger out on someone who doesn't even know you!
